Overview
Troya Living offers a wide range of furniture products, accessories, and services. However, customers often focused only on the primary product they intended to purchase, missing complementary items that would improve functionality, aesthetics, or convenience.
The challenge was to create a cart experience that not only increased order value but also helped customers make more informed purchasing decisions.
To address this, I designed a smart cart upsell system that combines contextual product recommendations, collection-based product matching, and volume discount incentives.
The Problem
The existing cart experience functioned purely as a transactional tool.
Once products were added to the cart, customers could only:
Review selected items
View pricing and discounts
Adjust quantities
Proceed to checkout
While functional, the cart provided little assistance in helping customers discover complementary products, related services, or complete furniture solutions.
As a result, the cart represented the end of the shopping journey rather than an opportunity to support customer decision-making.
Design Opportunity
Rather than treating the cart as a passive checkout page, I identified an opportunity to transform it into a guided shopping experience.
The goal was to help customers:
Discover products that naturally complement their purchase
Build complete furniture solutions
Understand available services such as installation
Increase confidence before checkout
At the same time, the business could benefit from increased product attachment rates and higher average order values.
The Solution
I redesigned the cart experience from a transaction-focused page into a recommendation-driven decision support system.
The new cart experience introduced three key features:
1.Smart Product Recommendations
Customers receive relevant recommendations based on the products already added to their cart.
Examples:
Bed → Mattress
Bed → Installation Service
Wall Bed → Matching Cabinets
Dining Table → Matching Chairs
2.Collection-Based Furniture Pairing
For modular furniture collections, the system automatically recommends compatible products from the same design family.
For example, when a customer adds a wall bed, matching cabinets from the same collection are suggested to help create a cohesive room solution.
3.Buy More, Save More Incentives
A tiered discount system encourages customers to bundle products within a single purchase while making potential savings visible directly inside the cart.
